Check out my
What you need in the first place is to capture as much detail as possible in the highlights by exposing "to the right". Only then you will have enough data for smooth transitions. Everything else is done by curves adjustment layers. I'm using reference points for the lightest points of the picture and watch them carefully to avoid blown-out highlights.
